Animal Kingdom won the 137th Kentucky Derby. He was ridden by John Velazquez, who was suppose to ride Uncle Mo, who was scratched from the race due to a stomach ailment that had plagued the horse for three weeks. Animal Kingdom, who was a 20-1 odds, made a late charge at the finish line.
The second place finished went to Nehro, third place went to Mucho Macho Man, and Shackleford finished in fourth even though he led for most of the race. The favorite that they thought would win, Dialed In did not even place.
This year’s Kentucky Derby hosted the biggest crowd ever, 164,858 fans packed Churchill Downs, both in the stands and in the infield. The pack of nineteen horses broke from the gate at 6:30 pm all trying to win the #2.17 million purse and the right to wear that coveted blanket of roses.
Winning the Kentucky Derby also give the winning horse the right to try to become a Triple Crown winner. The Kentucky Derby is the first race, the second race is The Preakness Stakes in Baltimore, Maryland, and the third race is the Belmont Stakes in Elmont, New York. The last horse to win all three races was in 1978 by a horse named Affirmed.
Today at Churchill Downs, there was approximately $22 million was bet at the track, which was more than last years $21.5 million purse.
