Schackleford, who finished fourth in the Kentucky Derby, beat Animal Kingdom at The Preakness, dashing Animal Kingdom’s try at being the first Triple Crown winner since Affirmed in 1978. Shackleford did not want to run today in The Preakness but his trainer had other ideas and so did his jockey. He let everyone know that he was not in the mood to run by bucking, kicking, and sweating a lot until the six crewmen finally shoved Shackleford into the number five slot.
Shackleford finished the race at twelve to one odds, battling for the lead until midway on the last turn, taking the lead away from Flashpoint. Although he did not appear to want to run, he held off Animal Kingdom’s rush for the finish line, finishing a half length in front. He covered the 1.3-16 miles in 1:56.47, a good time for a horse that did not run. Animal Kingdom, who was a two to one favorite finished second, Astrology came in third, and Flashpoint, who was leading, finished last.
For jockey Jesus Castanon and trainer Dale Romans, it was their first victory in a Triple Crown race. Now it is on to the final race of the Triple Crown, The Belmont Stakes, in June. Since there will be no Triple Crown winner this year, will Animal Kingdom and Shackleford be at The Belmont Stakes or will they sit out this race?
