Statue of Liberty to Close for Renovations, Security Upgrades

If you are planning a vacation to New York and seeing the Stature of Liberty is on your itinerary then you need to do it before the end of October because after the one hundred twenty fifth anniversary of the statue’s dedication it will be closing the inside to visitors. They are planning a twenty seven point twenty five million dollar renovation project of the Statue of Liberty.

If you come after the end of October you can still go to Liberty Island for a visit but you will not be able to go inside. You will still be able to see the statue relatively unobstructed in New York Harbor during the renovation which is projected to take a year.

The renovation project will move the elevators, mechanical and electrical systems, and stairs from the nineteenth century to the twenty first century. They are modernizing all this to make it safer and widen access. They want to be able to make the inside of the Statue of Liberty more accessible for everyone.

At this time a maximum of two thousand five hundred visitors are allowed in the pedestal and base of the statue and two hundred forty visitors are allowed to climb up into the crown although in the summer there may be as many as eighteen thousand people on the island. The crown was reopened two years ago. There is an estimated three point five million visitors a year to the island.

After the interior is closed you can still view the statue from the outside, take pictures, visit the gift shop and café, and get information from the National Park rangers.
