Three of the top social networking websites in the world are facing lawsuits in India. The Indian prosecutors sued Google, Yahoo, Facebook and other networking sites for their failure to remove some material that are reportedly insulting Indian leaders and other religious figures in the said Asian country.
The prosecutors charged the three social networking websites for “promoting enmity between classes and causing prejudice to national integration”. The Indian government said they are not happy with the materials shown by the defendants which insult Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, ruling Congress party leader Sonia Gandhi and major religious figures. It was reported that some illustrations on the widely popular social networking websites have shown Singh and Gandhi in compromising positions and pigs running through Mecca, Islam’s holiest city.
According to reports, if convicted the defendants could face fines and five years imprisonment for their offense. Facebook, Google, and Yahoo have yet to issue any official statement regarding their pending cases in India.
