In Graham, Washington, on Sunday a man set fire to his home killing both himself and his two boys two days after he was denied custody of his sons. Josh Powell, the father, had been ordered to psycho-sexual evaluation. For two years Josh Powell had been living his life under a cloud since his wife vanished in 2009. On Sunday a social worker had brought the two boys to their father for a supervised visit. The boys were such in a hurry to see their father that they ran ahead of the social worker. By the time she got to the door she was locked out. The social worker immediately called her supervisor and said that she smelled gas. Before anyone could get there the house burst into flames.
This is a very mixed up case that ended badly. In December, 2009 the boy’s mother was reported missing. Immediately after she disappeared, Josh Powell became a person of interest in her disappearance. He claimed that he had taken his two boys camping in the hours before her disappearance. Just after they ended the search for her, Josh’s father was arrested and accused of videotaping his daughter-in-law and other young girls and women sitting on the commode and taking baths in neighborhood homes. He is not facing voyeurism charges and child porn.
The children, ages five and seven, were living with their mother’s parents while the custody battle was going on. Right before the house blew up, Josh Powell had sent his attorney an email telling him goodbye and that he was sorry. According to the authorities there was some type accelerant used to make the house burn faster and hotter.
