Dr. Paul Volkman, age sixty-four and an Illinois physician, has been sentenced by a federal judge in Ohio to four life terms after being convicted in the death of four patients from a drug overdose. From 2003 to 2005, he had dispensed more Oxycodone painkiller medication that any other physician in the United States. The federal judge imposed the sentence on Tuesday along with prison sentences on thirteen other counts related to drug trafficking. These charges carried sentences that ranged from ten to twenty years.
The prosecutor states that Dr. Volkman made trips each week from Chicago to one location in central Ohio and three locations in southern Ohio before the federal investigators in 2006 were able to shut the operation down. Dr, Volkman states that he is innocence and that the judge should immediately release him.
