Alabama Officer Shot And Killed

One Huntsville, Alabama police officer was killed and another is in critical condition after responding to a shooting call on Tuesday.

“This is a devastating loss for the our department, the Huntsville community and the State of Alabama,” Huntsville Police Chief Kirk Giles said in a statement. “We send our heartfelt condolences to the officer’s family as they mourn their loved one who made the ultimate sacrifice.”

At 4:45 p.m., two officers from the Huntsville Police Department responded to a complaint on Governors House Drive, where “an offender at the scene,” opened fire on them after having “barricaded himself inside an apartment” at first.

“The offender was apprehended about 6:20 p.m. and transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries,” the department said. The HPD claims that the officers were sent to Huntsville Hospital for medical treatment. The second officer has had emergency surgery, but his condition is still critical, the agency reported.

The police later reported that both the perpetrator and the female victim “are at the hospital receiving treatment.” The area was restricted to traffic and people were warned to stay away because of the “strong police presence,” according to the HPD. Earlier road closures have been lifted.

“This is a painful night for the City of Huntsville and for our police family,” Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle said. “We are heartbroken. Words cannot express our loss. We have been overwhelmed by the show of love and support from our community, and we stand united with our police officers and their families in this tragic moment.”
