Officials say a suspected tornado k!lled at least one person and injured ten others on Saturday morning in the Rio Grande Valley town of Laguna Heights, Texas.
“The Laguna Madre area was hit by its fourth weather event in as many weeks. Overnight, a tornado caused extensive damage to Laguna Heights, the community between Port Isabel and Laguna Vista on Highway 100,” the City of Port Isabel said in a statement.
The Port Isabel Police Department issued a Facebook statement confirming casualties on the ground and widespread property damage. There will be a complete shutdown of Laguna Heights. “Crews are working to clear debris and downed power lines,” the statement said.
“At about 4 am, a tornado struck the Laguna Heights area. Multiple structures were destroyed and injuries were confirmed. Port Isabel Event Center is open for shelter.” Police say that motorists on Highway 100 will be redirected to Highway 48.
There is a significant chance of flooding and damaging winds from storms in southern Texas. Large hail and sporadic tornadoes are also possible. The National Weather Service has issued a flood watch for a vast area extending from Brownsville in southern Texas to central Oklahoma.

The alert is in place until Sunday afternoon. Over the course of the weekend, chances of rain and thunderstorms will rise across Deep South Texas. Most of the precipitation will occur on Saturday and Sunday.
