Volkswagen Chattanooga plant spokeswoman Amanda Plecas confirmed in an email to CBS News that one person was killed and two others were injured in a traffic incident on Saturday. The representative confirmed that all three individuals were, in fact, Volkswagen employees.

The car drove off the road “for unknown reasons” and hit the three pedestrians, according to a statement sent by the Chattanooga Police Department to CBS News. Department personnel have identified the deceased worker as Amber Reed.

While one victim had been treated and released by Sunday night, a second was still in critical condition at the hospital. The motorist was later recognized by authorities in Chattanooga as Jason Thornton.

He was taken into custody and charged with death by reckless driving, careless and negligent operation of a motor vehicle, reckless driving, felony reckless endangerment, and excessive speed.

According to a Volkswagen representative, production was paused for the day while the business “continues to work closely with local law enforcement as they investigate the incident.”
