13-year-old Steals Car, Kills 1, Injures 10 in California Crash

On Saturday, a 13-year-old boy was arrested in California after he allegedly stole a car, tried to get away from police, and caused a fiery crash that killed one person and hurt “nearly a dozen” others.

Sgt. Victoria Danzl, a spokesman for the Woodland Police Department, told SFGATE that the police first saw the teen driving erratically around 4:30 p.m. in Woodland, a suburb of Sacramento. An officer tried to stop the boy, but he kept going until he reached the corner of College and Court streets. There, he crashed into two other cars, which caught fire, according to a news release from the police department.

The tweet below confirms the news:

Four ambulances were sent to the scene by the police. Police said that one person died and that 10 others were hurt and taken to nearby hospitals. Danzl said that the injuries were “pain complaints” to “major.”

Since the suspect is a child, his name has not been made public. The person who died hasn’t been named either.

The 13-year-old was taken into custody, according to the police, because he was suspected of two felonies: vehicular manslaughter with negligence and evading an officer injuring someone. They said that after he got medical care, he would be put in the Yolo County Juvenile Hall.
