2 Wisconsin Police Officers Killed in Traffic Stop

On Saturday, two Wisconsin police officers were shot and killed while conducting a traffic check, according to reports. The Wisconsin Department of Justice released a statement late Saturday saying that they were looking into the shooting that took place in Cameron.

The state’s Department of justice reported that at 3:38 p.m., an officer from the Chetek Police Department conducted a traffic stop during which shots were fired. At the scene, both the Chetek police officer and the Cameron police officer were pronounced deceased.

The justice department reported that the shooting suspect was brought to a hospital, where he later died. The suspect’s and police officers’ identities were not immediately revealed.

“I am deeply saddened by the tragic loss today of two officers. I am thinking of their families and the Chetek and Cameron Police Departments at this incredibly difficult time,” Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul said in a tweet late Saturday.

According to the statement, the Wisconsin Department of Justice’s Division of Criminal Investigation is in charge of the probe, and after it’s over, a report will be delivered to the Barron County district attorney. When The Associated Press emailed the Wisconsin Department of Justice for comment, they did not get a reply right away.

Barron County’s Cameron located about 96 miles (154 kilometers) northeast of Minneapolis and 227 miles (365 kilometers) west of Green Bay, Wisconsin. The Wisconsin town of Chetek is located about 9 mi. (14 km.) southeast of Cameron. Using their Facebook page, the Barron County Sheriff’s Office expressed solidarity with the police departments in Cameron and Chetek.

The Marinette County Deputy Sheriff’s Association said in a Facebook post: “Tonight our hearts are heavy as we send our thoughts and prayers to the Village of Cameron Police Department, the City of Chetek Police Department, the Barron County community, and the families (both blood and blue) of two officers lost in the line of duty today.”
