2017 Rockford Deputy Shooter Convicted

In 2017, a Rockford man shot and killed a Winnebago County Sheriff’s Deputy.

After a hearing in front of Judge Brendan Maher and a jury, Jordan D. Spates was found guilty of trying to kill someone and hurting someone with a gun.

On September 23, 2017, Spates shot three bullets at Deputy Stephen Wright. Two of them hit him, once in the right arm and once in the left shoulder.

Three people will share a reward after being caught in the shooting of a Winnebago County policeman.

After shooting at Wright near Prairie Road and South Springfield Avenue, Spates ran away on foot.

He was caught at a home in Gwinnett County, Georgia, on October 17, 2017, and sent to Winnebago County to face the charges.

Due to the charges, Spates could spend more than 100 years in jail. Next month, he will get his sentence.
