On Friday, there was a quadruple shooting in the city’s Lawncrest district, leaving three people dead and a fourth with injuries. At least two of the victims are Philadelphia schoolchildren, according to SDP officials.
Two students from The Mathematics, Civics, and Sciences Charter School Inc. were killed, an eighth grader and an eleventh grader. The identity of the victims have not been revealed. The loss of so many children has left me with a sorrowful heart.
The total continues to rise. Veronica J. Joyner, president and CEO of The Mathematics, Civics, and Sciences Charter School Inc., called the situation a “crisis in the city” that needed to be addressed immediately. The incident occurred on Palmetto Street, near the 5900 block, at about 3:30 p.m.
Three victims were discovered by police: one on the sidewalk, one on the porch, and one inside a house. All four victims, ages 15 to 20, were declared dead at the spot, according to the police. A fourth person, a 16-year-old girl, was driven to a local hospital in a private vehicle. The teen was shot in the stomach but is now in stable condition.
Two individuals have been detained by police for questioning after it was reported that they drove the teen to the hospital. Additionally, a firearm was found in the car. Locals have expressed growing frustration with the situation. On Friday afternoon, a mother informed Action News that she had to bring her daughter home past the horrific crime scene.

“She asked me, ‘Mom what happened?'” recalled the mother. “I said ‘Baby, something bad happened.’ I thought that would be the end of her asking, and she said, ‘Well what happened?’ And I said, ‘Someone died.'”
“This is getting worse and worse, and something needs to be done,” added another woman at the scene. “There’s violence across the whole U.S. but Philadelphia has a problem and something needs to be done.'”
The Lawncrest area was the scene of yet another shooting just two weeks earlier. A shootout broke out near the Lawncrest Recreation Center. Nearly 30 shots were fired, according to the police, and one of them went through the daycare’s window.
“It’s frustrating ’cause again, I know the work that our men and women are doing in trying to stop, trying to prevent, these types of incidents from happening,” said Deputy Commissioner John Stanford with Philadelphia police.
“But again, we can’t lose hope, because if we lose hope, everyone in this city will lose hope.” No one has been taken into custody in connection with the four murders.
