The office of the governor of the province reported that 33 civilians were killed in an attack on a village in the western part of Burkina Faso that was believed to have been carried out by Islamic extremists.
In a press statement, it was revealed that the preliminary fatality toll from the incident took place on Thursday evening in the town of Youlou in the province of Mouhoun.
The governor of the province, Babo Pierre Bassinga, referred to the incident as “cowardly” and “barbaric.” In the statement, he said that the assault took place at five o’clock in the evening when residents were working in their fields alongside the Mouhoun River. The Governor has stated that there are now ongoing security operations to counter the extremists.
