On Sunday morning, a car plowed into pedestrians waiting at a bus stop in Brownsville, Texas, killing eight and injuring nine, according to police. A spokeswoman from the Brownsville Police Department told ABC News that the collision happened at 8:30 a.m. at the Ozanam Center when a gray Range Rover slammed into the bus stop.

Police say that in addition to the fatalities, other persons have been taken to the hospital with various degrees of injury. Authorities announced that they had a man suspect in custody who is a Brownsville resident and is currently undergoing medical attention. Police say the suspect is currently being held in a municipal jail and is refusing to cooperate.

According to ABC News’s sources in law enforcement, the FBI is currently investigating whether or not the crash was intentional and, if so, whether or not it was motivated by domestic violent extremism. The FBI is assisting state and local authorities but is not taking the lead.

Whether the crash was an accident or an intentional act against the victims due to their suspected immigration status has not yet been determined, according to the sources. Martin Sandoval, a spokesman for the Brownsville Police Department, said that some of the people hit on Sunday were migrants. Border patrol was taking care of the migrants, authorities added.

“We grieve for the victims in Brownsville, Texas, who were run over outside a migrant shelter where people from around the world are seeking asylum and safety,” the American Civil Liberties Union said in a statement Sunday.

“We understand the motive is still under investigation. This horrific event comes after weeks of escalating anti-immigrant policy-making by Texas politicians and while the Biden administration considers imposing a new asylum ban aimed at deterring, rather than welcoming, migrants seeking protection.”

According to authorities, the motorist is in the hospital and is currently under 24-hour guard surveillance. Police have claimed that they are currently conducting tests to determine if there has been any drug or alcohol use. Authorities have said nothing about a probable motivation or whether or not the incident was deliberate.

Secretary Mayorkas has been briefed on the tragic situation in Brownsville and has reached out to local leaders to offer condolences and the full support of the Department,” a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson said in a statement. “The Department is in close touch with local authorities to provide assistance.”
