A 54-year-old man from Ann Arbor, Michigan, was arrested in connection with the death of a former police oversight commissioner whose body was found in her home by officers doing a safety check.
A spokesman said Saturday that the guy will be charged with open murder, first-degree home invasion, and criminal sexual contact in the death of Jude Walton.
Authorities didn’t give any more information, like the suspect’s name.
Thursday around 1:30 p.m., Walton’s boss called the police at her Chapin Street home because she hadn’t shown up for work. Page said that a neighbor last saw her around 8 p.m. on Wednesday.
A police news statement says, “When officers got to the house and went inside, they found the body of a 51-year-old Ann Arbor woman.”
Page said Thursday that there was proof that the back door of the house had been broken into and that there were “obvious signs of trauma on her body.”
The cause of death will be found through an autopsy.
The news statement says that Walton used to be a commissioner for the Independent Community Police Oversight Commission. The Commission was made to help people get along better with the police and to make sure that the Ann Arbor Police Department does the “smart, fair, community-oriented policing that our community deserves,” as its website says.
Walton was a commissioner from the beginning of the group until last year when he quit. It was made by law in 2018, and Chair Stefani A. Carter said that it started working in 2019.
Carter said in a statement, “We are very sad to hear about her death, and we are praying for her family and friends during this terrible time.”
She also worked as the Director of Employee Experience at Avalon Housing, which helps people who are homeless find places to live. She had worked for the group for 14 years.
“Jude was very kind, funny, thoughtful, skilled, smart, humble, and wise. “When things got tough at work, she was the person we all went to,” the organization said in a Facebook post. “It’s hard to think about Avalon without her. We’re sad about this unbelievable loss.”
