A Homeless Man Dies in a Manatee County Jail Cell Following a Medical Episode

The sheriff’s office said in a press release Friday that a 59-year-old man was found unresponsive in his cell at the Manatee County Jail on Thursday afternoon.

The man who said he was “homeless” as his address was arrested on April 5 for being in contempt of court on old drug charges.

At 3:40 p.m. on Thursday, April 6, a “MED STAT” was called, and several deputies and medical staff went to his cell to try to bring him back to life using an AED, which is used to help people who have a sudden cardiac arrest.

When EMS got to the jail at 4 p.m., they kept trying to save the man’s life. The release said that he was found to be dead at 4:16 p.m.

The man’s death seemed to be caused by something medical, the release said. Detectives said that there were no signs of trauma or other signs of wrongdoing.

The man’s name won’t be made public until his family has been contacted, according to the release.
