A Man Was Detained and Charged With Shooting Near UNC-chapel Hill

A 28-year-old man was arrested this week on charges related to a shooting that happened on April 2 at a house on Mason Farm Road, just south of UNC-Chapel Hill.

Orange County Detention Office records showed that Ronnell Davone Canion was charged with assault with a deadly weapon that caused serious injury and assault by firing a gun into an occupied dwelling.

Canion was moved from the Durham County jail to the Orange County jail on Tuesday. On Wednesday morning, he was being held there on $450,000 bail.

He was supposed to go to court for the first time on Wednesday in Hillsborough, which is in Orange County.

The shooting was reported just before 5 p.m. on April 2. The UNC and Chapel Hill police departments haven’t said much about it. Police say it was a “targeted” shooting that did not put the public in danger.

The tweet below confirms the news:

Police said that the victim, who was hurt, has not been named in public and was not connected to UNC. A spokeswoman for the university said that the land where the shooting happened is owned by UNC, but it is not part of the campus.

Erin Spandorf, a UNC spokeswoman, said in an email that the April 2 shooting was the only shooting at the school in the past year. She said that between March 18, 2022, and April 6, 2023, there were six weapons violations on campus.

Spandorf said that a shotgun was used in one case, a pistol was used in another, and knives were used in the rest. She said that the weapons weren’t used in every case, but in four of the six, police did catch a suspect.

When there is a problem on campus, the Chapel Hill police, who cover other parts of town not on campus, sometimes help the UNC police.

Alex Carrasquillo, a spokesman for the Chapel Hill police, told The News & Observer in an email that his department has been called to two shootings with injuries so far this year. Last year, there were six shootings, five of which were fatal. He said that police had caught suspects in all of those cases.

At this point, it is not clear who arrested Canion. If you know anything about what happened, you can call 911 or the UNC Police at 919-962-8100.
