The Washington Post says that in August of 2021, a 19-month-old girl died after accidentally taking a fatal dose of fentanyl while on vacation with her family in Florida. While on vacation in Wellington, Florida, the Lavenir family discovered their infant daughter, Enora, unresponsive in her crib.
The Lavenirs had leased a four-bedroom, two-bathroom lake property through Airbnb. The baby’s death was first attributed to sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), but an independent toxicology study later found that the baby had a fatal dose of fentanyl in his or her system.
No one in the household had ever tried the substance before. The medical examiner for Palm Beach County was unable to ascertain how the kid gained access to the medicine despite an inquiry. “Therefore I am unable to develop probable cause for abuse or neglect leading to the death of Enora Lavenir.“
An investigator stated in the most recent report, “I am currently unable to determine how the child ingested the fentanyl,” For this reason, I find no evidence of criminal wrongdoing in Enora Lavenir’s death. A representative for the Palm Beach Sheriff’s Office verified that the case was closed and that accidental death was listed as the cause of death.
Legal action is being taken against Airbnb, the property owner, the rental manager, and a former tenant who hosted a party at the apartment, although no criminal charges have been filed. The family says that drugs from the party were not properly removed from the apartment.
Despite the rarity of fentanyl-related child mortality, the CDC reports that 260 children under the age of four have lost their lives due to fentanyl exposure in the year 2018. Although tracing the fentanyl’s origin is difficult, the family is determined to find out what happened. There is no doubt in my mind that Enora came into contact with fentanyl while staying at the Airbnb,” claims Enora’s father.
