The collapse of a trench at JFK Airport on Monday morning claimed the lives of two construction workers. After being retrieved from the trench, the two workers were proclaimed dead despite the best efforts of rescuers. Although flights were not delayed, the airport did issue a warning about potential traffic delays owing to the recovery work near Terminals 5 and 7.
At 11:25 a.m., a worker reported an accident on the job site to the New York Fire Department. At the time of the accident, crews were working near a cogeneration plant to accommodate the rising energy demands of the JFK redevelopment project.
Even though 12 fire trucks and 60 firefighters were dispatched, none of the workers were able to be saved. According to a statement released by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, all development at JFK Airport has been halted.
At that time, the victims’ names were unknown. The Port Authority has pledged to conduct a thorough inquiry and to work closely with any other relevant authorities conducting their own inquiries. In a statement, Governor Kathy Hochul expressed her condolences to the families of the two people who were killed.
