A Young Girl Was Shot While Sleeping in Northwest Charlotte

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department says that a young girl is in serious but stable condition after someone shot into her home in northwest Charlotte on Monday morning.

Officers said the shooting happened just after 1 a.m. on Burbank Drive. Olivia, who was eight years old, was asleep at home when a bullet hit her. She was taken to the hospital because her wounds could have killed her.

Pieces of the bullet went through her skull.

On Monday, Olivia’s doctors were waiting for the swelling to go down before they could operate on her.

We Need to Wake Up

“She went to sleep last night thinking she was going to get up this morning,” said Lucille Puckett, a community worker. “She needs to ride a bike. She shouldn’t be having surgery in the hospital, and this will affect her for the rest of her life.”

Puckett said, “We need to wake up.”

Later on Monday night, there was a meeting for the county of Charlotte City.

On the ground level, community groups are trying to stop crime.

Willis Draughn Jr. of Be You Be Great said, “Since Covid, we’ve had a lot to deal with.” “We stopped talking to each other. We had different ideas about how to deal with conflicts.”

“The violent crime actually keeps me up at night,” Jacqueline Richardson of Private Friend, Inc. said.

Officials from the city did not talk about the killing.

The tweet below verifies the news:

But Councilman Tariq Bokhari said earlier on Twitter that it is frustrating and that the city needs to figure out what is most important.

Community Shaken Up

“I just saw police cars everywhere,” said neighbor Patricia Fee to Anthony Kustura of Channel 9.

Police say they have made an arrest in the shooting that killed a Rock Hill mother in a duplex.

“As soon as someone mentioned a child, we all started crying,” said another neighbor.

People in the area hope that the fighting will end.

A friend said, “I don’t know what needs to be done, but I do know that some politicians need to get together and talk about it and figure it out.”

It’s not clear why the shots were fired, and no information about a suspect has been given.
