As you probably know, a jury in Virginia found Amber guilty of slandering Johnny Depp in June 2022 because of an opinion piece she wrote for the Washington Post in 2018. At first, the judges gave Johnny $15 million, which was made up of $10 million in damages and $5 million in punitive damages.
Punitive damages were quickly cut down to $350,000 because that is the most that can be given in Virginia. Amber got $2 million from the same jurors. In the end, Amber has to pay Johnny about $8.35 million in damages.
Before the decision, we thought Amber was worth about $2.5 million. Several news sources say that Amber’s legal fees up until the decision were mostly paid for by her homeowner’s insurance. As of this writing, it’s not clear if her insurance would also cover all of the losses.
Damages could also be cut down if the case goes to court. If her insurance doesn’t cover the losses, we think Amber would have a hard time paying for them on her own.
The next morning, June 2, 2022, Savannah Guthrie of “The Today Show” asked Amber’s lawyer straight out if Amber could pay the judgment. This was the day after the decision. “Oh no,” said Amber’s lawyer. “No way, no how.”
Amber might file an appeal as her next step. But before she could file an appeal, Amber might have to put up a bond for the full $10.35 million judgment, which her own lawyer says she couldn’t do with her own money.
Amber could also file for bankruptcy if she cannot pay the ruling and it is not covered by insurance. Even so, because of the way the law is set up, it’s possible that filing for bankruptcy would have no effect on the $10 million compensation part of the losses.
As it turns out, Amber decided to pay Johnny $1 million as a settlement, which is a lot less than what Johnny had asked for. Their deal, which was made public in December 2022, put an end to the case for good. In theory, her insurance company did agree to pay for it. Paychecks and Money From Endorsements
During the Depp v. Heard mutual defamation cases, witnesses said that Amber Heard made a total of $10 million before taxes from all sources (salaries, endorsements, etc.) between 2013 and 2019. During that time, 2019 was her best year financially, when she made about $3 million.
Testimony also showed that Amber had a 4-movie deal with Warner Brothers that paid her $450,000 for the first movie she was in for the company. Then, she got a million dollars for her work in the first Aquaman movie. She had a deal that said she would get $2 million for the second Aquaman movie and $3 million to $4 million if there was ever a third one.
