An Officer Is Accused Of Assaulting A Prisoner While Beating Tyre Nichols To Death

According to a federal civil rights complaint, one of the five former Memphis, Tennessee, police officers accused of killing Tyre Nichols, 29, by beating him during a traffic stop earlier this month was also accused in 2016 of participating in a prison assault that left an inmate unconscious. Nichols was 29 years old at the time of the incident. According to the complaint that was submitted to the United States District Court in Tennessee in April 2016, it was stated that the officer, Demetrius Haley, was one of three corrections officers who were accused of assaulting Cordarlrius Sledge while he was incarcerated in Shelby County. The suit was filed on behalf of Sledge. Sledge initiated the legal action on his own, without the assistance of an attorney; but, in 2018, a judge ruled that he improperly served a summons on one of the defendants, which led to the dismissal of the case. Sledge's claims were not addressed by Judge Thomas Anderson in the decision that was issued on March 2, 2018. Sledge is said to have stated in his complaint that on May 16, 2015, authorities from the Shelby County Division of Corrections examined his cellblock at the facility. This facility accommodates offenders who are serving sentences ranging from misdemeanour penalties to felony prison terms of up to 12 years. According to the lawsuit, the law enforcement authorities accused him of flushing "contraband" when they allegedly noticed smoke in the area where he was located. According to the lawsuit, Sledge claimed that Haley and another police punched him in the face. Sledge also blamed the other officer on Haley. According to the allegations made in the lawsuit, a third officer scooped Sledge up and threw him face first into the sink before throwing him to the ground.
