Who Was Anton Walkes?

Defensive midfielder/defender Anton Charles Walkes (8 February 1997–19 January 2023) played professionally in England.

Walkes kicked off his club career with Tottenham Hotspur of the Premier League, with whom he made a solitary appearance in the League Cup. Before the 2017 season ended, he was loaned to Atlanta United. After spending the rest of the 2017–18 season on loan at League One team Portsmouth, Walkes was signed by the club permanently in July 2018.

After two more successful seasons with Portsmouth, including an EFL Trophy victory in 2019, he re-joined Atlanta United in January 2020. He signed with Charlotte FC in 2022 and played there till his untimely demise the following year.

The soccer star was in Miami on January 18th, 2023, for a roughly two-week training camp with Charlotte FC.

According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, Anton was discovered unconscious at roughly 3 p.m. following a two-boat collision near Miami Marine Stadium. After receiving CPR and being transported to the hospital, Anton tragically passed away the next morning due to his wounds.

Anton’s passing was confirmed by Charlotte FC on Thursday morning. We are devastated to report that Anton Walkes passed away this morning,” the team announced in a statement. Our prayers are with his family at this time.

The passing of Anton Walkes has left everyone at Charlotte FC “devastated,” as the club’s owner, David Tepper, put it.

“He was a fantastic son, father, partner, and teammate whose happy attitude to life touched everyone he knew,” David said in the club’s statement. It has been said of Anton that he “made those around him better people in all aspects of life and represented Charlotte FC to the highest degree both on and off the pitch.”

The following was released by Major League Soccer (MLS): “It’s impossible to put into words the collective sadness felt throughout Major League Soccer upon hearing of Anton Walkes, a player for Charlotte FC, passing away today. The team and the fans adored Anton because of his talent and commitment.”

Originally from London, England, Anton Walkes began his professional career with Tottenham Hotspur before moving on to MLS clubs Atlanta United and Charlotte FC in the 2021 MLS expansion draught. In 2022, he joined the latter and played in 23 games (21 starts) while recording five shots on goal.
