Brave NY Police Officer Shot in High-Stakes Pursuit of Alleged Bloods Gang Member

A Suffolk County Police officer was wounded on Thursday while trying to catch a robbery suspect who officials believe to be a member of the Bloods gang.

The shooting occurred near Coram, Long Island, according to a statement posted on Instagram by the department.

After receiving information that Janell Funderburke, who was wanted for an armed robbery that happened two days earlier, was inside, officers began to perform surveillance outside a residence on Norfleet Lane.

The 20-year-old left the house around 12:50 EST and ran away when he saw police.

A six-year veteran of the Sixth Precinct officer in plainclothes pursued the suspect on foot and told Funderburke to stop after identifying himself.

Funderburke shot the officer twice after refusing to stop.

While the officer stood in front of 86 Homestead Drive, he struck him in the upper right thigh.

Fellow police applied two tourniquets and Quikclot, which, according to physicians, halted the bleeding.

The police officer’s condition is presently stable after being driven to Stony Brook University Hospital.

The officer has a 17-month-old daughter and is engaged, according to the department.

Funderburke was taken into custody after leaving 98 Homestead Drive on his own accord after a 20-minute confrontation.

Additionally, he was previously detained in August for illegally possessing a firearm. He is currently being prosecuted for both the robbery from two days ago and the attempted killing of the officer.
