California Coalition Rallies for 'Justice for Renters Act'

Sacramento, CA, October 24, 2023 – In a powerful display of unity, a diverse coalition of California renters, housing advocates, elected officials, and social justice organizations will gather on the West Steps of the Capitol Building in Sacramento, CA, on Wednesday, October 25th.

They are coming together to champion the ‘Justice for Renters Act,’ a statewide ballot initiative that seeks to eliminate California’s rent control ban. This initiative aims to empower local communities to stabilize rents and create more affordable housing options for low-income and middle-income renters.

The highlight of the event will be the delivery of over 732,000 letters – filling an impressive 250 boxes – to Governor Gavin Newsom. The letters carry a simple yet powerful message: support, or at the very least, do not oppose, the 2024 California rent control ballot initiative.

The ‘Justice for Renters’ campaign was officially launched on May 25th. This momentous occasion took place on the steps of Los Angeles City Hall and was marked by the announcement that rent control advocates had successfully gathered over 810,000 signatures in support of the proposed 2024 ballot measure.

This number significantly surpassed the required 546,651 valid California voter signatures needed to qualify the measure. The Secretary of State’s office subsequently certified the measure to be placed on the November 2024 ballot on July 26, 2023.

This event signifies the culmination of a significant grassroots effort and reflects the determination of Californians to address the housing crisis. The ‘Justice for Renters Act’ holds the potential to reshape housing policy in California, offering hope for a brighter, more affordable future for renters across the state.
