A person who was thought to have stolen a catalytic converter was stabbed to death in a South El Monte driveway early Friday morning when a resident challenged a group of thieves.
Lieutenant Michael Gomez of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said that officers were called to a house on the 11200 block of Thienes Avenue at 2:37 a.m. When the police arrived, they found a man dead at the scene.
The person who lived there told the deputies that he was sleeping when he heard people messing with his car outside. When he went outside to find out what was going on, he was met by three or four people. A fight broke out, and one man was stabbed to death.

Investigators say that two or three other suspects got away and were last seen going east on Thienes Avenue in a small car.
Gomez says that tools found at the scene show that the suspects were in the middle of trying to steal catalytic converters. There were several cars in the garage.
The dead suspect, who was said to be between 35 and 45 years old, was lying partly under one car in the garage.
A source said that two other people were in the house at the time of the fight.
People thought that a cooking knife was used.
Investigators stopped and talked with the resident.
