Child Safely Released After 7-hour Confrontation With PSL Police and Trapped Man in Home

Police in Port St. Lucie said that an 8-year-old boy who had been locked inside a home with a man who might have been armed for about seven hours was freed Friday.

Charges and people involved: The Crisis Negotiation and SWAT teams of the Port St. Lucie Police Department and the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office went to a call Friday.

Police in Port St. Lucie said the man, who told a family member he had a gun, was “going through a mental health crisis” and had locked himself in a home with an 8-year-old boy inside on Friday afternoon in the 900 block of Southwest Jaslo Avenue. The police said they were afraid for the boy’s safety.

After talking with the man for about seven hours, the boy was freed without being hurt. Later, the Port St. Lucie SWAT team went into the house, and around 10:30 p.m., the man was taken into arrest. Not one person was hurt. Police said that at first, they couldn’t find a gun in the house.
