The Final Scene of Guardians of the Galaxy 3 Confirms Cinema is Dead

Guardians of the Galaxy 3

Guardians of the Galaxy 3

If you really want to see Guardians of the Galaxy 3, the latest Gunslinger, and you haven’t seen it yet, turn around at the end of this text. Few people want you to know what I’m about to tell you. But wait! Do yourself a favor before you leave: if you don’t already have a Disney Plus sample, get one right away, or grab one of the best Disney Plus deals. It’s something you’ll need.

Don’t be like me. I went to see the movie on opening night, eager to see what Chris Pratt’s Peter Quill and his dysfunctional surrogate family had been up to since the last time I saw them all here. I went to my neighborhood IMAX theater to watch the movie.

To be clear, my unlimited movie ticket has let me watch all of the Guardians of the Galaxy movies on this big screen. Done that. Done it. I’ve seen them all. So, besides seeing Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, and Thor: Love and Thunder, that’s the only thing you need to do before seeing Marvel’s latest movie, right?

Not quite. We all had extra work for this one, it turned out. It’s so important that if you haven’t done it, you might find the rest of the story a little confusing. Disney’s message to Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) fans is clear: pay the TV viewing fee and get your act together.

What You Should Know Before You Go

And if you haven’t seen it yet, the MCU debuts of a few characters will knock you off your feet, especially at the end.

That’s not a good feeling for fans like me, who decided that something had to go because of the high cost of living and because, as an audio expert, I already pay for all the best music streaming services. And that something was one of the best streaming services in the world, Disney Plus.

I know that some of the best Disney Plus shows are on Disney’s main streaming service (hello, The Mandalorian Season 3, you and your ancestors are going to be very important to my enjoyment of Star Wars: Ahsoka, aren’t you?).

The tweet below explains “Vol. 3 is about ending the story of these Guardians, not about setting up anything else…”

WandaVision, I’m looking at you: Doctor Strange’s part of the Multiverse is all about putting things together that don’t go together. But this is the first time that not having Disney at home has hit me hard, and here’s why.

What did we (I) miss in the TV show about the Guardians? Quite a bit, to be honest. Everyone’s favorite cosmic supergroup has a new, fancy ride called “The Bowie.” Groot looks totally ripped, which can be explained by the passage of time, but there’s also a new character called “Cosmo the Dog,” who is a cosmonaut who speaks English through a widget in her suit and has crazy telekinetic powers. She is voiced by Bodies Bodies Bodies’ Maria Bakalova.

Kevin Bacon, too. Kevin Bacon, eh? Everyone’s favorite Footloose actor and one of Quill’s favorite heroes from Earth. You might remember that Gamora died in “Infinity War,” which made Peter very sad.

Gamora is alive and well in the MCU thanks to Endgame’s time-traveling adventures, but she’s younger than she was before, and, most importantly, she doesn’t know who Star-Lord is. The Holiday Special will start with Quill being sad about the place. In the Holiday Special, Drax and Mantis take “legendary hero” Bacon and give him to Quill to cheer him up.

All of this was news to me. So you can imagine how surprised I was at the end of the movie when a picture of Kevin Bacon from a scrapbook or collage appeared with the rest of the group. My inner monologue screamed, “Why is Kevin Bacon’s face there, though?” and my outer monologue quickly followed.

Then, in the last scene, we see Quill eating cereal with his grandfather. This is after the Guardians break up and Quill goes back to Earth to be with his grandfather, where they last saw each other in Guardians 1. Quill is complaining about how the 45-year-old son of their neighbor likes to watch him mow the lawn.

The old man shakes out the newspaper for the morning. We’re ready for a hint, people! “Alien Abduction: Kevin Bacon Tells All,” says the title on the front page. I felt left out because I was in the second scene after the credits, which was also Gunn’s last scene in the MCU.

I really like Kevin Bacon, and it was fun to hear Quill talk about him all the time in the Guardians flicks. So, when I found out that he had been in the MCU at some point, it was a huge letdown for me. Even though I love this strange and misfit-fabulous part of the MCU, I can’t help but feel sad about it.

I Was Looking at It All Wrong

People shouldn’t say things like, “I pay for unlimited tickets at my movie theater, so I shouldn’t have to pay for Disney Plus either,” because Disney knows the opposite is true. Most of its loyal fans around the world, especially MCU fans, are now waiting until Marvel movies are available on Disney Plus before they watch them.

Just look at how Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Thor 4, and the upcoming Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania didn’t do as well as planned at the box office (find out when Ant-Man 3 comes to Disney Plus). Shortly, why pay to go to the movies when Disney cares most about its trapped, streaming-first audience?

So, I can’t help but feel that my favorite movie theater is dying. Even though the plague is over, people are still afraid to go out to see movies on a big screen. This is even more obvious when you see people buy the best TVs, soundbars, and other home entertainment gear they could afford during lockdown.

So, yes, I still love my neighborhood Odeon with all my heart. And yes, if my only two concerns are 1) Guardians of the Galaxy and 2) going to the theater as soon as the movie comes out, paying a monthly fee for 44 minutes of important content that helps me understand this movie franchise and enjoy it might seem like a bit of a non-argument to some of you.

At the time this article was written (May 12), Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 had made $365.6 million at the box office, so a lot of people are going to see it.

But there are no other things to do at the movies. No washing machine beeps, no neighbors yell, and there’s no Amazon delivery for the people in the apartment above me (but they’re not home, so I have to take it in…). My time is spent at the movies, and I’m sad that Disney doesn’t really get that, or if it does, it wants me to pay for the growing amount of TV-based MCU material as well.

And I get it. Because the MCU is all connected, if you don’t keep up with most Marvel TV shows, you’ll be lost when you go to see the next MCU movie in the theater. Just look at The Marvels, which comes out in November and needs you to have seen Captain Marvel, Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, Shang-Chi, WandaVision, Ms. Marvel, and Avengers: Endgame.

Still, there are people like me who can’t afford a Disney Plus contract right now, and we’ll be the ones who miss out on important MCU information before we go watch the next movie in the series. No matter what side you’re on, that doesn’t make sense to me.
