Paul Farmer was an American scientist, doctor, humanitarian, and author. He was known for his work helping millions of poor people around the world get free medical care.

He was born in North Adams, Massachusetts, on October 26, 1959. He grew up in Weeki Wachee, Florida. He got his diploma from Hernando High School and then got a scholarship to go to Duke University.

In 1982, Farmer got a Bachelor of Arts in medical anthropology and finished college with the highest grade possible. After he graduated, the doctor went to Haiti to help out at a hospital as a volunteer.

In 1990, the scientist got his MD and Ph.D. in medical anthropology from Harvard University and kept working in Haiti. Farmer did training in internal medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital from 1993 to 1993. In 1996, he did a fellowship in infectious disease.

Farmer started the non-profit group Partners In Health in 1987 with the goal of giving poor people who are sick direct health care services. The group, which was based in Boston, began in Cange, Haiti, and now has about 16 sites in the U.S.

It also started doing business in the Navajo Nation, Rwanda, Lesotho, Malawi, Mexico, Peru, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Russia, and Peru. The death of Dr. Paul Farmer has left us very sad. We have a Program in Global Surgery and Social Change because of Paul. He was our best friend and biggest supporter, and we will keep his legacy of hope, dignity, and health care for all living.

In 2009, the doctor was given the job of chair of the Department of Global Health and Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School. In the same year, he was made Deputy Special Envoy to Haiti by the United Nations. Before that, he had been a Special Envoy for the United States under former President Bill Clinton.

In 2010, Harvard gave Farmer the title of Kolokotrones University Professor. In 2012, he was also named the UN Secretary-General’s Special Adviser on Community-Based Medicine and Lessons from Haiti.

Partners in Health started the University of Global Health Equity project in 2015 to provide the best health care by fixing social and systemic problems that make healthcare delivery less fair and less efficient.

The farmer was the editor-in-chief of the Health and Human Rights Journal and was on the board of the Aristide Foundation for Democracy. He also helped start the Institute for Justice & Democracy in Haiti and worked there as a Board Member.
