Former Lansing Priest Pleads Guilty to S*xual Assault

This week, a former Catholic priest who used to work at two churches in Lansing pleaded guilty to one count of first-degree criminal sexual conduct involving a child from Burton.

Vincent DeLorenzo, who used to live in Flint and then in Marion County, Florida, pleaded guilty in Genesee County Circuit Court on Tuesday. He is 84 years old.

DeLorenzo will be sentenced on June 13 at 8:30 a.m. The Michigan Attorney General’s Office said that he will get five years of probation, the first of which will be spent in the Genesee County Jail. This is because he agreed to plead guilty.

He must also sign up as a sex offender, get therapy for sex offenders, and pay back what he stole. All of DeLorenzo’s victims will be able to say something about how the crime affected them when he is sentenced.

A press statement said that DeLorenzo was one of the first five priests charged by Nessel at the end of May 2019. He admitted to sexually assaulting a 5-year-old boy after he performed a funeral service for the boy’s family member who had died in 1987 at Holy Redeemer Church in Burton, near Flint.

More Charges Against Him Were Dropped In Return for His Guilty Plea

In return for his guilty plea, more charges against him were dropped. He was first charged with three counts of CSC in the first degree and three counts of CSC in the second degree. Those claims were about a child who was sexually abused at Holy Redeemer’s old school between 1995 and 2000. The boy was a student there at the time.

According to the Diocese of Lansing’s list of credible accusations against priests, DeLorenzo was called in 1965 and kicked out of the ministry in 2002. During his career, he worked at St. Thomas Aquinas in East Lansing and St. Casimir in Lansing, but no dates are given. He also worked at Sts. Joseph and Augustine in Kalamazoo, St. Pius X in Flint, and St. Robert Bellarmine in Flushing.
