Gang Member Who K!lled 9-year-old in North Sacramento Park Gets 138-year Prison Sentence

A 24-year-old man shot four people in a Sacramento park in 2020, killing a 9-year-old girl. He was found guilty of murder and other charges and given a jail sentence of nearly 140 years.

In March, a jury in Sacramento’s Superior Court found Laise Burton Hands guilty of killing Makaylah Brent on Oct. 3, 2020, at Mama Marks Park in the city’s Del Paso Heights area.

Prosecutors showed that Hands was trying to kill a rival gang member at the park. He got out of his car and fired nine shots at the park with a 9mm pistol. He instead shot four people, including Makaylah, who was 9 years old, and a girl who was 7 years old. Two of the three people who were still alive were related to Makayla.

The tweet below confirms the news:

Hands was found guilty of murder, attempted murder, being a convicted criminal with a gun, and two counts of attack with a semiautomatic weapon.

On Friday, Judge Maryanne Gilliard gave Hands a prison term of 138 years, and 8 months to live. The court agreed with the claim that Hands had been convicted of an attack with a semiautomatic gun in the past.

According to the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office, a second shooter in the event was a man who stayed in the car behind Hands and fired two more shots from a.40-caliber handgun.

Prosecutors and law officials say they haven’t found that suspect yet, and they haven’t said what gang the shooters were in.
