The body of Jordan, 62, was discovered on December 30 at approximately 12:30 a.m. inside her residence in Brooklyn. This was just a few hours after Justice Sonia Sotomayor of the United States Supreme Court issued an order that was anticipated to send her back to jail.

On Wednesday, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in New York City determined that the cause of death was suicide. And asserted that asphyxiation was the result of the victim having their head covered with a plastic bag and having nitrogen gas replace the oxygen in the room.

It occurred more than a decade after Jordan was accused of administering a fatal amount of medication to her autistic son Jude Mirra inside a luxurious suite at the Peninsula Hotel in February of 2010. Jude Mirra had autism.

After having served more than ten years of her sentence, Jordan was finally released from prison on December 9, 2020. A federal judge at the time issued an order that she be released to home confinement on the condition that she post a bond in the amount of $250,000.

Sotomayor made the order the day before she was discovered dead, canceling an earlier one from December 20 that had allowed her to stay free on bond while the high court considered her appeal. She was found dead the next day.

Even though Jordan was wealthy and so had the resources necessary to care for her son with cognitive challenges, Manhattan Supreme Court Judge Charles Solomon ruled that she had committed murder and found her guilty verdict upheld. During the initial round of the sentencing process, the judge said the following: “She had all the money in the world to help Jude, but she wound up ending his life.”
