After inviting a conspiracy theorist to speak in front of lawmakers earlier this year, Arizona state representative Liz Harris was ousted from the House of Representatives on Wednesday for ethics violations.

The Republican representative, who was elected to her first term in November, was expelled from the House of Representatives because her “disrepute and embarrassment to the House” led to “disorderly behavior.” In the House of Representatives, which is controlled by the Republican Party, 46 of the 60 votes cast were to eject the Republican representative from office.

The vote to expel her was 13-1. CNN tried calling Harris at both her workplace and home. CNN has asked her for comment, but she has yet to answer. On the House floor, Republican Rep. Lupe Diaz of Arizona said, “We need to have integrity in the institution, and I do not take this vote lightly.” Diaz then voted to expel Harris. I’m going to have to say yes on this one.

Republican Representative Alex Kolodin spoke up in support of Harris just before the vote. “They [the public] will perceive that they don’t have a true voice in this body because when they elect somebody to rock the boat and she does it, and she does it in a way that is admittedly wrong and should have been better examined, that member will be expelled.

So, I vote nay, reluctantly but firmly, to safeguard this body, to maintain public faith and confidence in us, and most importantly in the legislature as a means of being the people’s voice and bringing about meaningful change. When the resolution was approved, a man’s voice could be heard off camera saying, “Shame on you.” What a disgrace!

We then lost connection with the Arizona State Legislature. Harris and Jacqueline Breger said they conducted an investigation in February, and Harris invited Breger to discuss their results. Breger spread a lot of false information and personal assaults about prominent figures, including Democratic Governor Katie Hobbs.

After one of these false rumors went viral online, Hobbs joked in front of the cameras, “No, I am not involved with the Sinaloa cartel.” I’m not laundering their money or accepting bribes from them. Harris is well-known in Arizona as a denier of elections and conspiracy theorist. Throughout the Republican-led investigation into the 2020 votes in Maricopa County, she was a consistent presence.

Prominent election officials have spoken out against the review, calling it an attempt to reverse the results in that state. In a statement supporting the expulsion, Arizona House Democrats said, “misinformation, lies, and conspiracies are not harmless, and it’s not just politics.”

They pointed out that partisan media and social media influencers spread the lies Breger told during his televised testimony. At that very instant, our institution’s credibility was harmed. In a statement, House Democrats said, “That damage continues to mount, and for that, there must be accountability.
