South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) reopened the case just weeks after the Murdaugh murders, and on March 23 SLED confirmed to the Smith family that it was officially considering the case as a murder investigation. The case had originally been ruled a vehicular hit-and-run homicide in 2015.
probable ties to the Murdaughs, but none have been confirmed. After Alex Murdaugh’s conviction, the case received its own explosion of attention when the prominent company Bland Richter, which is known for defending Murdaugh’s victims, announced last week that it will be representing the Smith family.
On Thursday, Bland also announced that they had brought on board Dr. D’Michelle P. DuPre, Dr. Dan Schultz, and Dr. Heather Walsh-Haney to assist Kinsey with the investigation. Eventually, Bland Richter may assign another crime scene investigator to work alongside Kinsey.
The team was dubbed “Stephen Smith’s Dream Team” by Bland. “We are so fortunate,” said Bland. “We are really excited. It’s a great team, a dream team of experts. But what excites me most is the cooperation that we have gotten from SLED. Chief Mark Keels has been amazing.”
Bland continued by saying that the State Law Enforcement Division (SLED), which came under fire for its policing during the Murdaugh murder trial, feels “vindicated and empowered” after the defendant’s guilty verdict and is ready to put its entire resources into the investigation of Smith.
Bland, speaking for SLED, claimed that now that the “Murdaugh stranglehold” was broken, residents could be more willing to talk about the Smith murder. Sandy Smith has put up a GoFundMe to help pay for her son’s investigation team, and they’ve already earned over $110,000!
