Officials said Friday that an Indiana woman who was already charged with attacking an 18-year-old student has now been charged with a federal hate crime.
In January 2023, Billie Davis, who was 56 years old at the time, stabbed the teenager in the head on a public bus. The video of the attack shows that Davis and the student did not talk to each other before Davis stabbed the student.
Documents from the court show that Davis said she stabbed the Chinese-American girl because of her race. Davis was charged with trying to kill someone and hurting someone very badly. The student, whose name has not been made public, lived through the attack.
On Thursday, a federal grand jury in Evansville, Indiana, charged Davis with one more count of committing a hate crime. The accusation only had one count.

According to the indictment, Davis hurt the student because of her race and country of birth. In the charge, Davis is also accused of trying to kill the victim. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Peter A. Blackett for the Southern District of Indiana and Trial Attorney Anita Channapati from the Criminal Section of the Civil Rights Division.

“This week, Bloomington was saddened to be reminded that anti-Asian hatred is real and can hurt people and our community,” Wimbush said of the city in southern Indiana. “No one should be bullied or hurt because of their background, race, or history. Instead, the Bloomington and IU communities are better because they are made up of people with many different identities and points of view.
