Irene Cara publicist, Judith A. Moose, expressed her deep sorrow at the news of her client’s passing, saying, “On behalf of her family, it is with terrible grief that I announce the passing of Irene Cara.” She “passed away peacefully in her Florida home” after a successful career as an actress, singer, songwriter, and producer.
Moose shared what he overheard: “The family of Irene has requested seclusion while they deal with the loss of their loved one.” “She was extraordinarily talented, and the legacy of her movies and music will live on long after she has passed away.” After starring as Coco Hernandez in the 1980 musical Fame and performing the show’s title song, Cara first came to the attention of a large audience.
As a result of her outstanding performance, she was considered for the Grammy award for best new artist as well as female pop vocal performance. Three years after the song’s initial release, in 1983, she collaborated on writing and performing the song “Flashdance… What a Feeling” for the film adaptation of the same name, which starred Jennifer Beals and Michael Nouri and was a commercial and critical success.
Because of this song, Cara was awarded not one, but two Grammys, as well as an Oscar for Best Original Song. 2011 saw the release of Irene Cara’s final album under the Hot Caramel moniker.
