John Madden Cause of Death

A football star died in 2021, which made Christmas sad for football fans. A press statement from the NFL said that John Madden would die on December 28, 2021. Let’s read about what was John Madden Cause of Death.

John Madden Cause of Death

John Madden died at age 85, which was a surprise. At this time, we don’t know what caused the death.

Roger Goodell, the commissioner of the NFL, gave tribute to the star by writing:

“On behalf of everyone in the NFL, we’re sorry for Virginia, Mike, Joe, and their families.” We all know him as the Hall of Fame coach of the Oakland Raiders and an announcer who worked for every major network. But more than anything else, he was a loving husband, father, and grandfather.

The tweet below confirms the news of

Goodell went on, “Coach loved football more than anyone else. He played soccer. He was a great person for me and many others to talk to.”

John Madden’s Medical problems

In 1960, when Madden was 24 years old, the plane his football team was on crashed, killing the team boss and 16 other players. In 1979, Madden was on a trip from Tampa when he had a major panic attack. After that, he decided he would never fly again.

At first, he took trains between towns, but in 1987 he made a deal with Greyhound Lines. In exchange for advertising and speaking events, they gave him a custom bus and drivers. Because he wouldn’t fly, he never called the Pro Bowl in Honolulu or any preseason games outside of North America.

He quit leading the Oakland Raiders in 1978 when he was 42 years old. At the time, he was thought to be one of the best coaches in professional football. He had gut ulcers, panic attacks, many problems with his joints, and surgeries on his joints.

At age 79, he had surgery to unblock the arteries going to his heart. Before that, he had been hospitalized several times for problems with his heart, hip, knee, and esophagus. On December 28, 2021, at the age of 85, he died at his home in Pleasanton, California.

Big Belly Means More Risk of Diabetes

I have never seen John Madden’s medical papers, but he had a very big belly, which is often a sign of a fatty liver that causes diabetes and heart disease.

Because his grandson has type I diabetes (also called “juvenile diabetes”), Madden has worked for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation for a long time as a spokesperson and fundraiser. Madden likely had Type II diabetes, which is much more common, but I couldn’t find any record of this.

More than 70% of adults in North America will get diabetes or pre-diabetes, which can be treated by changing how they live. Most cases of type II diabetes and prediabetes are caused by insulin resistance, which means the body doesn’t react to insulin. Insulin resistance is caused by too much fat in the liver (J Clin Invest, May 19, 2020).
