Man Accused of Shooting NC Deputy Escapes Jail

WTVD says that one of the guys accused of killing a North Carolina deputy got out of jail in Virginia.

The Prince Edward County Sheriff’s Office says that Alder Marin-Sotelo escaped from the Piedmont Regional Jail with another inmate. About 90 minutes west of Richmond is where the building is.

Deputies told WTVD that Alder and 44-year-old Bruce Callahan from North Carolina were first noticed stolen from the jail at 4 a.m. on Monday. The director of the jail said he thinks Sotelo and the other inmate messed with the lock on the back exit door. They were still on the run as of Tuesday morning.

“What went wrong? What steps could have been taken to make sure this wouldn’t happen again or shouldn’t have happened in the first place? How are they going to make sure that something like this doesn’t happen again? “In this case, the suspect who is still on the run is a clear threat to the public and to law enforcement,” LiCausi said.

Court records say that the second man arrested in Burke County is charged with killing a Wake County officer.

The killing of a North Carolina officer has a $100,000 reward.

In August 2022, Marin-Sotelo and his brother are said to have killed Wake County, Deputy Ned Byrd.

On August 11, 2022, the officer was shot several times when he went to a call on a dark part of Auburn Knightdale Road near Battle Bridge Road.

When the sheriff’s office sent other deputies to check on K-9 officer Byrd, they found him dead, the sheriff said. In July 2009, he started working for the sheriff’s office as a jail officer. In March 2018, he was sworn in as a deputy.

WTVD says that Marin-Sotelo and his brother Arturo were caught on Interstate 40 in Burke County and then charged with murder. They said they were not guilty of the charges against them.

WTVD said that Arturo Marin-Sotelo is still in the Wake County jail.

Prince Edward County deputies asked anyone who sees Alder Marin-Sotelo to call 911 right away. WTVD says that the US Marshals are in charge of the investigation into the runaway prisoners.
