Man Sentenced to 15 Years in Federal Prison for Wichita Woman’s 2019 Fentanyl Death

A man was given 15 years in federal jail on Tuesday for selling two pills with fentanyl in them that killed a woman in Wichita in 2019.

In January, 25-year-old Javyn Johnson admitted to one count of selling fentanyl in connection with the death of 29-year-old Chanelle Pratt.

Pratt, a mother of two, was found dead on August 17, 2019, by her boyfriend. She had taken a pill she thought was a Percocet. According to earlier Eagle stories, it was actually a Percocet pill with fentanyl in it.

“Chanelle was the mother of twin 8-year-old sons whose life was cut short when she took just half of a pill sold to her,” U.S. District Attorney for Kansas Kate Brubacher said at a gathering of law enforcement for National Fentanyl Awareness Day at the Epic Center.

In his plea deal, Johnson said that he didn’t know the pills contained fentanyl, according to a January news release from the U.S. district attorney’s office for Kansas. “But he admits that he gave her the fentanyl that killed her.”

“No sentence can bring Chanelle back, but we are committed to remembering her and holding those who sell fentanyl accountable,” Brubacher said.

The tweet below confirms the news:

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment says that 347 people died in 2021 from using fake opioids.

In the U.S. as a whole, 107,375 people died of drug overdoses or poisonings in 2022. The Centers for Disease Control says that fentanyl was involved in about 67 percent of these deaths.
