Man Shot by Officer at Traffic Stop Was Armed

Authorities say that a Southern California police officer shot and hurt a man who was armed during a traffic stop over the weekend.

The driver, who was 20 years old, was stopped around 7 p.m. on Friday in Santa Ana, police said in a statement.

“During the traffic stop, officers came across a person with a handgun, and an officer-involved shooting happened,” the statement said.

Officials say that the driver was shot in his lower and upper torso. It wasn’t clear if he had tried to get a gun or shot at the officers.

Police found a gun in the car, but they didn’t know right away if it belonged to the driver or to the 30-year-old male passenger.

The Orange County Register said Saturday that the passenger was taken into custody because he or she might have broken a law about weapons.

The statement says that neither the passenger nor the officers were hurt.

Investigations were still going on.
