On July 27, 1984, Brad and Jan Scherzer welcomed Max into the world in Chesterfield, Missouri. His younger brother Alex committed suicide in 2012. When he was little, Scherzer loved baseball and cheered for the St. Louis Cardinals. He played baseball, basketball, and football when a student at Parkway Central High School.
Scherzer’s performance so impressed the Cardinals’ then-scouting director Marty Maier that he selected him in the 43rd round of the 2003 MLB draft. Scherzer chose to enroll at the University of Missouri instead of declining, though.
