Mayor Arrested for Assault and Battery During Community Event Scuffle

The Richland County Sheriff’s Office said that the mayor of Eastover was arrested on Friday after a fight broke out at a community event.

Two weeks after deputies reacted to 911 calls about a fight, Mayor Phillip Gunter was arrested on Friday. Gunter was found to have started the fight, which hurt a guy who was not named.

The mayor of the town of 614 people, which is in the southeast corner of Richland County near Congaree National Park, turned himself in to officers on Friday. He was charged with second-degree attack and battery.

When deputies arrived at the spot on May 5, the fight was over and neither Gunter nor the victim were there. The victim then called 911 from somewhere else to say that he and Gunter had gotten into a fight.

The tweet bel0w verifies the news:

Over the course of two weeks, deputies talked to Gunter, witnesses, and the victim. They came to the conclusion that Gunter and the victim knew each other and were involved in what the sheriff’s office called a “personal dispute” that turned violent when Gunter started the attack.

In a statement put out by the sheriff’s office, Gunter was said to have helped with the probe. Deputies said that the mayor turned himself in when there was a warrant out for his arrest.

Gunter was taken to the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center to be put in jail. WLTX said that he was given a security bond for $7,500.
