Authorities reported that a mechanical component fell in the indoor pool area of the Gaylord Rockies Resort in Aurora, Colorado, on Saturday, injuring at least six persons.
“For a structural collapse at the Gaylord in the pool area,” the Aurora Fire Department received a contact at 9:50 a.m. local time, Chief Alec Oughton stated at a press conference on Saturday.
According to the chief, the fire department had personnel on site for training at the time and was able to immediately reach the indoor pool. The fire service stated in a news release that members of the Technical Rescue Team, which specializes in collapsed structures, were also dispatched to the hotel.
The chief reported that there were between 50 and 100 people at the pool when it appeared that a piece of the HVAC system had fallen. He claimed that two victims of the incident who suffered critical injuries were taken by the fire department to nearby hospitals, along with four others who had non-life-threatening wounds.
According to a witness, the hotel was evacuated when someone triggered the smoke alarm. The apparatus that fell into the pool deck, according to the witness, looked to be a duct. A toddler was allegedly being treated on the pool deck after the collapse, according to the witness.
Requests for comment were forwarded by the hotel to the Aurora Fire Department.
