A California mother has been taken into custody after her two young children were killed while fleeing onto the highway after their dropped baggage.
On Sunday evening about 6 o’clock, a car driven by Sandra Ortiz’s son, age 10, and daughter, age 16, were hit and killed on the Route 78 Freeway in Vista, California, which is close to San Diego.
The kids, who haven’t been named, leaped out of the moving vehicle when their mother, a 33-year-old woman, pulled onto the right shoulder in her green GMC Yukon.

Both of them were hit by a white Nissan Sentra while they were reaching for a bag that had blown out of the back of their car. There have been no charges filed against the 41-year-old Nissan driver who stayed at the scene until police arrived.
Meanwhile, the mother was arrested for driving under the influence, gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, and endangering the welfare of a child since she stayed in the car as her kids rushed into oncoming traffic. Officials have stated that their inquiries into the crash are ongoing.
