The man who is suspected of killing five people in midtown Atlanta was upset that doctors wouldn’t give him the anti-anxiety drug Ativan, his mother said.
Deion Patterson, who is 24 years old, is accused of killing one woman and hurting four others when he opened fire in the waiting room of a Northside Hospital medical office.
Sophia Choi of Channel 2 talked to Patterson’s mother after the killing, but it didn’t air on TV. She told Choi that her son’s doctors wouldn’t give him the anxiety-relieving drug that can also be addicting.
Channel 2 Action News found out that Patterson used to be in the Coast Guard but was let go in January. No one knows why he was let go.
Police said that he had only been in the office for two minutes before he started shooting.
Patterson was caught hours after he hid in a pool house at an apartment complex in Cobb County. On the video, he gives up to the police before being put in handcuffs.
Nearby companies with surveillance cameras caught Patterson running away from the doctor’s office.
Police said Patterson ran away from the doctor’s office after the killing and stole a running, empty truck from a Shell station nearby.
The woman who was killed has been named as Amy St. Pierre, who was 39 years old and worked at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Three of the other four people who were hurt are still in serious condition and have not been named.
Patterson has been charged with one count of murder and four counts of a serious attack.
