After Cash App founder Bob Lee was stabbed to death in San Francisco on Tuesday, Elon Musk said that many of his San Francisco friends had been “severely attacked.”
The CEO of Twitter told the 43-year-friends old’s that he was sorry for their loss and asked San Francisco’s district attorney, Brooke Jenkins, to be tougher on violent criminals.
“Many people I know have been severely assaulted,’ Mr. Musk tweeted. “Violent crime in SF is horrific and even if attackers are caught, they are often released immediately. Is the city taking stronger action to incarcerate repeat violent offenders Brooke Jenkins?”

At 2:35 a.m. on Tuesday, Mr. Lee was found dead in front of a high-end apartment complex at 300 Main St, between Soma and the Financial District. He had been stabbed to death.
In a statement, the San Francisco Police Department said that first responders helped the father of two before rushing him to the hospital, where he died from his injuries.

The city’s homicide department is looking into it, but they haven’t said anything about a suspect yet.
Conservative politicians and pundits often say that San Francisco is a lawless city where drug use and homelessness make violent crime and robberies more likely to happen.
This story was part of the reason why former District Attorney Chesa Boudin lost his job in a recall election in June of last year. He had tried to get rid of cash bail and lower the number of people in jail.
Ms. Jenkins was re-elected as District Attorney last November on a platform of balancing criminal justice reform with harsher punishments for violent offenders.
The Independent asked her to say something about the murder of Mr. Lee, but she didn’t answer right away.
Figures from the San Francisco Police Department’s crime reports show that the situation is much more complicated than is often thought.
In 2022, there were 55 murders, which was the same number as the year before. In 2019, only 41 people were killed in the city, which was the lowest number in 56 years.
In 2022, there were more cases of aggravated assault, but they were still a lot fewer than in 2016, 2017, and 2018. The latest numbers show that there have been eight murders in the city in the first two months of 2023.
Forbes says that Mr. Musk is the second richest person in the world. His companies Tesla and SpaceX have been based in California for many years, but he has become more and more hostile toward the state’s political leaders in recent years.
In 2021, he moved the Tesla headquarters to Texas and also moved to the Lone Star State to live.
In January, Mr. Musk asked a federal judge to move a lawsuit brought against him by Tesla shareholders out of San Francisco. He said he wouldn’t be able to get a fair trial there.
Mr. Lee started the Cash App and was the chief technology officer at the payment company Square, which was later renamed Block and led by Jack Dorsey.
At the time of his death, he was the chief product officer for the crypto payment company MobileCoin.
