Even though it’s part of the job to deal with dangerous situations, two Richmond firemen faced danger in a way they probably hadn’t expected early Thursday morning.
After a fire alarm went off in his room at 2:45 a.m., city cops said a Missouri man staying at a Richmond hotel wouldn’t help.
A statement says that 47-year-old Brandon Lynn Smith at first wouldn’t let staff into his room at the Comfort Suites at 421 Commerce Drive because he said he didn’t need help.
When city firemen got to the scene, they told Smith that they would have to check the room to make sure there was “no hazard that could put the lives of everyone in the building in danger.” This made Smith even angrier.
“I’ll shoot you scumbags through the door!” Smith yelled obscenities and racial slurs at the firemen, they say.

At some point, Smith, who was said to be “completely naked,” quickly opened the door to the room and threatened to attack the firefighters and shoot them.

Smith is said to have said, “I own this place,” and also called himself “the judge and jury.”
“I will shoot you where you stand!” he said, according to the court record.
The report said that Smith still wouldn’t help when the police showed up.
Officers used a master key to get into the room, where they found Smith still naked and trying to get something out of his backpack.
He was arrested, and a loaded handgun was found in his bag.
Officers said that Smith, who was from Marshfield, Missouri, about 190 miles southeast of St. Louis, was “helped to put on pants” before being taken to the Wayne County jail.

Later that day, he was charged in Wayne Circuit Court with one count of obstructing a firefighter, which is a misdemeanor, and two counts of intimidation, which is a Level 6 felony that carries up to 30 months in jail.
On Friday, the Missouri guy was still being held in jail on a $15,000 bond.
