New Bedford Fisherman Jailed for $431K Federal Tax Evasion

A federal court in Boston gave a New Bedford man a sentence for not paying more than $431,000 in federal income taxes over seven years.

Victor M. Cruz, who is 43 years old, was sentenced on May 9 by U.S. Senior District Court Judge Rya W. Zobel to time served (10 months in jail) and one year of supervised release. Cruz was also told to pay $431,835 to the IRS to make up for what he had done. Cruz pleaded guilty to three counts of not paying taxes on February 12, 2023.

Cruz did not file federal tax forms for any of the years 2015–2017, even though he worked as a crew member on different fishing boats and made between $183,000 and $212,000 per year.

Cruz had also not filed federal income tax returns for the years 2010 through 2014, even though he made at least $150,000 a year.

Cruz didn’t file any federal tax returns, even though the IRS sent him at least two letters telling him to do so and to pay any back taxes. He also did other things to keep the government from tracking down his income or figuring out how much he owed in taxes.

The tweet below verifies the news:

Cruz avoided paying more than $431,000 in federal taxes, not counting fines and interest for not paying on time.

The news was made public Thursday by United States Attorney Rachael S. Rollins and Joleen D. Simpson, who is in charge of the Internal Revenue Service’s Criminal Investigation office in Boston. The case was brought to court by Assistant U.S. Attorney Victor A. Wild of Rollins’ Securities, Financial, and Cyber Fraud Unit.
