Norway Unveils Life-size Euthanized Walrus Sculpture

Norway has made a bronze sculpture of a walrus that became famous around the world after it was seen playing and sunbathing in an Oslo harbor last year. The walrus was later put to sleep by the government.

Norwegian artist Astri Tonoian revealed the life-size sculpture on Saturday at the Oslo marina, not far from where the real 600-kilogram (1,300-pound) mammal was seen resting and relaxing in the summer of 2022.

The walrus, named Freya, quickly became a famous attraction for people in Oslo. However, Norwegian officials later decided to put Freya to sleep, which angered the public, because they said people didn’t follow their advice to stay away from the huge animal.

The Norwegian news agency NTB said that a crowdfunding effort to pay for the sculpture began last fall. NTB said that the private project had raised about 270,000 Norwegian kroner ($25,000) by October.
